Tenacious and sensitive approach keeps independent publisher in business

Established in Sydney in 2011, Brio Books is an independent Australian book publishing company. When faced with a breach of contract issue against a large, established third party, Brio’s board turned to Andrew Thompson at CIE Legal for advice.

Understood the dynamic

“We were the little guys up against the big guy,” said Rod Morrison, Brio’s Publishing Director. “Our relationships with our suppliers are critical. We don’t have large departments we can run and hide in, so our relationships are everything. We needed an advisor who would understand this dynamic and could work with us in the right way.”

Kind and caring

Andrew set about understanding the case and, says Rod, “processed the information very quickly, so he was able to give me a position in 24 hours”.

“Clearly Andrew has considerable intellect and knowledge of the law, but nowadays, that isn’t enough. What made this experience so positive from our perspective was that he did his work in a kind and caring manner.”

Critical to survival

Ultimately, the case was favourably resolved. Rod is in no doubt that this was a critical for his company’s survival. “Andrew worked extremely hard on our behalf and his knowledge of the law, tenacity and good sense saved a small independent publisher from significant loss.”
